Abstract

529,450. Spray carburetters. ELLIOTT, A. G. May 19, 1939, No. 15023. [Class 7 (iii)] In order to avoid the formation of ice or snow in the air intakes, particularly of aircraft engines, and to assist in the separation of dust &c. from the air supplied to the engines, a tunnel 12, open at both ends, is arranged so as to pass through it an air-stream in excess of that required by the engine, the air-inlet pipe 15 having its intake opening 16 situated within the tunnel so that air from the airstream has to undergo a change in its direction of motion in order to enter the intake opening. The tunnel preferably diverges at its inlet end 13 and converges at its outlet end 14, the air intake 16 being placed at the point of maximum air pressure. The end of the intake 16 may lie across the tunnel, facing the outlet 14 ; or it may be oblique, but still directed rearwardly ; or it may be parallel to the air-stream, with a projecting lip at its front end. The air-inlet pipe 15 is preferably combined with an aircleaner, connected to the carburetter by a self-detachable connection as described in Specification 502,496, [Group XXVIII].
