Abstract
529,310. Coated fabrics. SMITH, R. J., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. May 15, 1939, No. 14498. [Class 140] [Also in Group IV] A viscous mixture of a water-soluble cellulose derivative in a dispersion of a polyvinyl compound is applied to the. back of a pile fabric and the fabric is then dried. The treatment results in the production of an artificial fur-like material. The polyvinyl compound may be a polymer, co-polymer, or inter-polymer of a vinyl ester, vinyl halide, styrene, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, or ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid. The water-soluble cellulose derivative may be a methyl, ethyl, or glycol cellulose ether, cellulose glycollic acid ether or other cellulose ether acid or a salt thereof. Mixtures of cellulose derivatives may be used. Plasticisers, softening agents, e.g., turkey red oil, sulphated fatty oils, emulsions of tallow, olive oil, and the like, or other substances may be incorporated in the composition. Lustre or colour may be modified by addition of titanium dioxide, lithopone, barytes, or other pigment. The coating may be filled by the addition to the composition of china clay, carbon black or talc. In an example, a pile fabric with wool pile and cotton back is spread on the back or backfilled with a viscous mixture of polymethylmethacrylate dispersion and water-soluble methyl-ethyl cellulose solution. The coated fabric is dried at 60‹C. Fabric having a viscose pile and a cotton back is similarly treated. The dispersion of the polymer may be obtained by mixing methyl methacrylate with dibutyl phthalate, emulsifying in water containing ammonium persulphate and 'heating at 80‹C. until the desired polymerization is effected. Cotton pile fabric is spread on the back with a mixture of polyvinyl acetate and tritolyl phosphate in aqueous dispersion together with an aqueous solution of methyl or ethyl cellulose. A fabric with viscose pile and cotton back is spread on the back with a mixture of polyethoxyethylmethacrylate aqueous dispersion, water-soluble methyl ethyl cellulose in aqueous solution, and china, clay. Other polymers which may be used include interpolymers of vinyl acetate and vinyl chloride, and polymers of ethyl acrylate.
