Abstract

529,196. Feeding sheets. HARRIS-SEYBOLDPOTTER CO. May 24, 1939, No. 15415. Convention date, June 2, 1938. [Classes 100 (i) and 100 (ii)] In a sheet-feeding apparatus for printing or other machines the sheets are registered by front stops and by side-registering mechanism carried by a common auxiliary frame which is adjustably secured to the main frame of the machine in such a manner that simultaneous adjustment of the two registering mechanisms can be effected. Also sheet-detecting and sheet-calipering devices are arranged in conjunction with the auxiliary frame. As applied to a machine of the kind described in Specification 506,636, in which the sheets are fed to an intermittently driven transfer cylinder 11, the sheets are registered against front stops 42, Fig. 1, and side-registering guides 75, Fig. 3, carried by and adjustable on an auxiliary frame comprising a cross member 20 which is clamped to side ledges 19 on side frames 13, 14 of the machine. The member 20 is of less width than the distance between the frames, so that it can be adjusted angularly as well as longitudinally, the adjustments being effected by nuts 24 which engage screws 23 secured to bars 21 integral with the member 20. The nuts 24 clamp the screws 23 to studs 25 on the frames 13, 14, and index devices on the studs 25, and fixed pointers 27a and index marks 28 on the bars 21 assist the accurate adjustment of the member 20. The member 20 is secured in position by screw-operated side clamps 31, and pivoted screw-operated front clamps 32. The front stops 42 are carried by a shaft 40 which is oscillated by a crank arm 44, rod 45, and a lever 46 operated by a cam on a shaft 51 driven by gearing from the impression cylinder 10. The sheets are fed by tapes 18 between guides 74, 73, and pass over a table 12 to the stops 42. While in contact with the guides 42 the sheets are acted upon by a sheet-detecting device 121, Fig. 5, carried by the shaft 40, by a side-registering device comprising rollers 80, 106, Fig. 3, which are brought together to move the side edge of the sheet into contact with a side-guide 75, and by a calipering-device comprising an oscillating choke-bar 119 operated from a cam on the shaft of the transfer cylinder 11 to hold back the sheets if more than a single sheet passes at once to the stops 42. These devices are carried by a transverse bar 62 which is adjustable with the member 20, so that all the devices are adjustable longitudinally of the machine simultaneously, and maintain their parallelism, although the side-registering device may be adjusted independently transversely of the machine. This is effected by mounting them on a slide 63 which can be adjusted on the bar 62 by a coarse and a fine adjustment, and which is held in place by a spring clamp. The upper roller 80 is freely mounted in a pivotad arm 79, and is pressed into contact with the lower roller by a spring when permitted by a rod 85 which is reciprocated from a cam 94. The sheets may be registered on either side, and as shown in the partial view, Fig. 3, are registered on the left hand side. The detecting- fingers 121, Fig. 5, co-operate with notches 122 in the feed table 12 and enter the notches if a sheet is not fed correctly, or if in the case of a double feed the sheets are held back by the choke-bar 119. The fingers 121, when no sheet is present, engage a notched plate 124 and retain a lever 125 from moving counter-clockwise. A hook 130 is thus restrained from movement in a clockwise direction and so a lever 132 is permitted to release a latch 141 and permit the tripping mechanism to be operated under spring action. A hand-lever 146 may restore the tripping mechanism. The tripping mechanism is similar to that described in Specification 500,215.
