'I'he improvements of the invention are intended, although not necessarily limited, to sheet y feeders for printing presses wherein the individually fed sheets are first properly registered by front and side registering guides and thenA veri-- gaged by the grippers of the transfer mechanisml which presents the registered sheets to the impression-cylinder of the press for printing.
Although the sheets may be finally *and accurately registered by the sheet controlling means provided therefor on the sheet registering table, nevertheless serious inaccuracies in registration .may result in the printed sheet, depending on whether the lay of the sheet V coincides with the printing form or plate to the degree of exactness required'for the particular printingl job. This is especially important in multi-color work where any variation inthe front lay of the registered sheets or shifting inthe position of the form materially affects that preciseness in registration demanded in'.prlnting work of this character. y
It is therefore desirable to provide the operator with a convenient adjustment for the frontvlay of the registered sheets and this is accomplished by the present invention by the novel manner of supporting the sheet registering table for adjustment and by the improved structural means provided in combination therewith for effecting su'ch adjustment.`

Said frame and top board 2 I, comprising the sheet registering table, are supported by stationary frame structure in a mannerproviding for adjustable movement of the sheet registering table for modifying the lay of the sheets registered by the table. Said stationary frame structure essentially consists of frame elements 30 and 3l located on the respective sides of the table and which adjustably support the table by means of eccentrics at the rear and supporting links or connecting rods at the forward end of the table, all of which will be presently described in detail.
The frame members 22 and 23 journal the roller 32 over which pass tapes for advancing the sheets to the forward end of the table in the well known manner. In accordance with the invention the members 22 and 23 are cut away as at 33 to provide a recess within which is disposed supporting structure such as the rods 34 for supporting adjustable side registering guides 35 and which are thus supported by the stationary frame structure independently of the movable table 20. At the forward end of the table there are Iprovided sheet controlling elements which register the front edge of the sheets prior 4 to their being fed to sheet processing mechanism such as a printing press. The sheet controlling elements generally consist of introducing nozzles 36, slow down hooks 31, front registering guides 33 a'nd 39, and sheet detector means generally indicated by numeral 40.
Operation of a sheet registering table such as described above is as follows: Sheets are advanced in the conventional manner by the moving tapes and which may feed the sheets separately or in lapped relation, all as well known in this art. At the forward end of the table the leading edge of the sheets is engaged by the introducing nozzles 36 which guide said edge into contact with the slow down hooks which function as preliminary means for registering the front edge of each sheet. After having received a preliminary registration the sheet is then presented by the slow down hooks 31 to the front registering guides 38 which finally and accurately register the front edge of the' sheet, thus determining or accomplishing the lay of the sheets on the feed table. While in this position the sheet is then side registered by the side registering guides 35. The improvements of the invention are intended. although not necessarily limited, to sheet feeders for printing presses and when the table is associated with a printing press it will be understood that the sheet transfer mechanism 4I of the press including the sheet gripping elements '42 are operative to grip the leading edge of the registered sheet, removing the same from the feed table for the purpose of presenting the sheet to the gripper mechanism 43 of the impression cylinder 44 of `the press. Although the sheets on the feed table are finally and accurately registered with respect to each other by the front registering guides, nevertheless perfect registration of multi-color work can only be secured when the lay of the sheet coincides with the printing form or plate of the press. It is therefore desirable that the press operator be able to conveniently adjust the front lay of the registered sheets and this is accomplished by the present invention i by supporting the sheet registering table in a manner permitting adjustable movements of the table in a direction parallel to the travel of the fed sheets as well as at an angle laterally in the plane of travel of said sheets and about a swivel point located at the front edge of the table relatively close to the stationary side registering guides and the sheet `gripping elements of the transfer mechanism.
In accordance with the inventionthe parallel and angular adjustments of the sheet registering table are effected by means of eccentrics located at the rear of the table, as best shown in Figures 4, 5 and 6. The side frame members 22 and 23 are each provided with arear journalling portion 45, which portion is bored'for receiving the eccentrics 46 and 41, respectively, said eccentrics being formed integral with the arms 48 and 49. Each eccentric and arm is bored for receiving its stub shaft 50, the same being suitably fixed toits stationary side frame 30 or 3|. Thus the frame members 'of the registering table are supported by stub shafts 50 and adjustment is provided for through the eccentrics 46 and 41 rotatable on said stub shafts. The arm 48 is connected at 5l'to link 52 which is pivotally connected' in turn to the arm 53 fixed to shaft 54. The shaft extends transversely of the table frame and is journalled for rotation by the members 22 and 23. In a similar manner the arm 48 is pivotally connected at 55 to link 56 which is connected in turn at 51,
armena I and two arms, namely, 60 and 5|, together with locking screws for locking the parts in adjusted position. Whereas, the lever is mounted for free rotation on shaft 54, the arms are fixed to the shaft by pins 62 so that movement of the arms will produce rotation of the shaft. Lever Il is locked in position by the locking screw I3, the
shank of which is disposed in the arcuate slot 54 and threadedl into frame 23. The arm 60 is locat-l ed on the opposite side of the frame 23 and is substantially similar in size to lever 58 having an arcuate slot 65 within which is located the shank of locking screw 66, said screw having threaded engagement in frame 23 for locking the arm thereto. Arm 6| is smaller in size than both lever 58 and -arm 50 but is constructed similarly, having a slot 61 for accommodating the locking screw 88 and which has threaded connection to lever 58 to which lever the arm 6| is thus locked.
It will be understood that actuation of the links 52 and A55 will rotatethe eccentrics for adjusting the registering table. When both eccentrics are rotated to the same extent the table will move in a direction-'parallel to the travel of the fed sheets.

For eiecting adjustment of eccentric 46 on the driving side of the table the locking screws 66 and 88 are releasedso that the shaft 54 can be rotated.
By inserting a pin wrench or similar tool in recess 18 the arms can be moved to the desired, predetermined extent and which can Abe measured by the indicia on plate 1|, Figure 5. The arms are then locked by tightening theA screws 66 and 68. For adjusting eccentric 41 on the feeder side voi.' the table itis necessary to release screws 63 and 68 and by inserting the tool in recess 12 the 4 'lever 58 onlyis moved since shaft 54. remains locked. When it is desired to adjust both eccentrics equally the locking screws 63 and 68 are released so that lever 58 and arm 60 are free to move and the desired adjustment can thus be effected. It will be understood that this actuation will be uniform for both eccentrics since lever 58 is locked to shaft 54 through arm 6|.
In accordance with the invention the parallel and lateral adjustments as herein` described will be imparted to the table'at the rear thereof, the table being supported at its forward end by means of links 19, see Figure 14, one of which is pivotally attached to each side of-the table. This arrangement permits of. forward and backward movement of the table as well as of the center line of the registering table and functionsV as a guide to prevent any lateral movement thereof. Said swivel essentially consists of a swivel* member 14 which is fixed toor formed integral with the 'main frame 15 of the feeder, Figure 2. The swivel member is mounted'between the two guide blocks 18 secured by boltsl11, Figures 8 and 13, or otherwise fastened to the front transverse member 24 of the table. Parallel movement of the registering table is accordingly permitted since for this movement the guide blocks 15 will move parallel to the side edges of the swivel member 14 as the table rocks on its supporting links. It will be understood that a vdefinite angular adjustment of the table 28 in the horizontal plane can be accomplished. For that purpose vthe guide nblocks 16 on the member 24 and the stationary member 14 function as` a pivot or swivel at the front end of the table. and the lateral movement thereof is transmitted to the rear section of it. Such movement is limited and is absorbed by an axial sliding movement of the eccentrics 48 and 41 on their respective stub shafts 50. This movement is so infinitesimal that the coacting memf bers present no interference therewith. The angular movement of the registering table actually takes place about a swivel axis which substantially to the front registering guides. Also its distance v' from the stationary side registering guides is not.

When making an angular adjustment of the table, the movement which takes place can best be explained with refrence to Figure 4 of the drawings.- For example, to correct any misregister of the sheets resulting from a discrepancy in the placement of the form on the plate carrying cylinder, it may be necessary to advance one corner of the sheet with respect to the other. However, it is imperative that the side register `be maintained atv all times. Therefore, any lateral movement of the table at its front end must be avoided. This action of the coil spring maintains roller .|04 against the actuating cam |0|. Rotation of shaft 8| in a clockwise direction accordingly takes place as a result of tension im parted thereto by coil spring when permitted by cam |0|, whereas, rotation of shaft 8| in a counterclockwise direction is effected by cam |0| by forcing arm |02 downwardly. In addition to this oscillating motion of arm 0| and thus the front registering guides 38 and 89 fixed thereto it will be understood that the parts have bodily movement as a result of the lifting action of arms 86.
Simultaneously with the return movement of the guides 88 the shaft 81,'actuated by means of the cam 88 the lever 00, Figure 3, is rocked in counter-clockwise direction causing levers 88 to elevate the bearings 82 and therewith the complete front guide assembly until the guides 88 and cover plates 'I8 are raised substantially above the feed table 20. This movement of the guides is for the purpose of raising the trailing portion of the transferred sheet and insuring engagement of the subsequent sheet` by the front guides. After the leading edge of the subsequent sheet has engaged the guides 88, the complete assembly is again lowered to the position shown in Figure 8 by virtue of the contour of cam 88. see Figure 3, which permits shaft 81 and lever 88 to move in clockwise direction thereby lowering the guides 88 and their associated members to their registering position.
Since the registering table 20 is capable of adjustable movement as herein described, it is necessary to provide improved actuating means for the sheet controlling elements carried by the table, such as the front registering guides. in order that the adjustments of the table will not vadversely affect their actuation because the actuating means are supported in. the stationary frame and do not move with the registering table. For this purpose the connecting link |00, in accordance with the invention, is perpendicularly disposed with respect to the plane of the registering table. 'I'he right angle relation between the top board 2| and the link |05 enables adjustable movement of the table to take place without affecting in the least the position of the front registering guides with respect to the table since it will be observed that the degree of oscillating movement imparted by cam |0| will be the same even thoughthe table may have movement in a direction parallel to the fed sheets or angularly with respect to the fed sheets.

This up and down movement of the holder 20 takes place in proper timed relation with the feeder. The pendulum has a blade portionl which projects into the path of the sheets, being fed to the front registeringguides such as 39, which are disposed on the respective sides of the sheet detector means and are similar in all respects and voperated the same as described with respect to front registering guides 38. At the time when 35 a sheet is adapted to contact the pendulum |25 l it is in elevated position so that the pendulum 'i is released with respect to notch |30 provided by stationary bracket |21. In the event the sheets are being properly fed to the front registering 40 guides, a sheet at this time will 'thus contact the pendulum and swing the same about its pivot |26 against the light tension of spring |28. This action of the sheet in swinging the pendulum in a clockwise direction, Figure 10, will move the same out of alignment with hook |30 so that as the holder |20 moves downwardly its stroke is not restrained and consequently tripping does not take place. However, in the event a sheet is misfed to the front registering guides or a sheet is not fed at all, then the pendulum |25 is not en'- gaged and swinging of the same out of alignment with notch |30 does not take place, with the result that the succeeding stroke of the holder |20 f is restrained which actuates tripping mechanism by conventional means 'not shown.

In a sheet feeder, the combination of a movable frame member, a registering table supported thereby, sheet controlling devices carried by said movable frame member, a stationary frame member, mechanism, including a pair of eccentric elements rotatably supported by the stationary frame member and disposed in spaced relation at each side of the movable frame member and operatively associated therewith adjacent the rear of the registering table, a swivel member guiding said movable frame member at the forward end thereof and permitting movement of the registering table in directions parallel to the travel of the sheets fed over the table as well as angular-ly to the path of said sheets and in the plane thereof, and a manually operable control device located on one side of the movable frame member only and supported thereby for selectively actuating said eccentric elements to thereby effect adjustment of the registering table and the sheet controlling devices for the purpose of modifying the front lay of the fed sheets.
13. A sheet feeder as defined by claim 12, wherein the control device includes a member for actuating each eccentric, and locking means for the members respectively.

In a sheet feeder, the combination of a movable frame member, a registering table provided thereby, sheet controlling devices carried by the movable frame member, a stationary frame member, eccentric means supported by the stationary frame member and having operative association with the movable frame member on the respective sides thereof, whereby rotation of said eccentric means will impart adjustable movement to the registering table together with the sheet controlling devices for adjusting the front lay of the sheets'fed by the table, actuating means for the sheet controlling devices respectively including operating shafts journalled by thestationary frame member. and connecting linkage between each shaft and its sheet controlling device, at least one element of said linkage being disposedl perpendicularly to the plane of the table, whereby movement of the table for the purpose of adjusting the front lay of the sheets will not affect the operation of said sheet controlling devices.

In a sheet feeder, the combination of a movable registering table, sheet controlling elements carried thereby; mechanism for selectively 14 varying the registering position of the table at either side thereof, to thereby correct the registering lay of the fed sheets, and manually actu-L ated control means mounted at and actuated from one side only of the feeder for imparting motion to said mechanism to thereby vary the registering position of said table at either side thereof as well as parallel to the direction -of sheet travel and'while the feeder is in operation.
18. In a sheet feeder, the combination of a movable registering table, sheet controlling elements carried thereby, mechanism for selectively varying the registering position of the table at either side thereof.J to thereby correct the registering lay of the/fed sheets, and manually actuated control menns for imparting motion to said mechanism to Ithereby vary the registering position of said table at either side thereof as well as parallel tothe direction of sheet travel and while the feeder is in operation, and means operatively yassociated with said control means for indicatingzthe exact degree of variation in the registering position imparted to the table.
