Abstract

529,195. Feeding sheets. HARRIS-SEYBOLDPOTTER CO. May 24, 1939, No. 15414. Convention date, June 2, 1938. [Classes 100 (i) and 100 (ii)] A front registering-device for a sheet-feeding apparatus which is especially applicable to stream feeders, is constructed, so as to do away with slow-down mechanism, by employing a large number of stops to engage the front edge of the sheet initially and then removing all but two or more of the stops so that the final registration is effected by a fewer number of stops preferably two or three. A sheet detecting device for stopping the machine in the absence of feed may be arranged near the stops. As shown applied to a machine of the kind described in Specification 506,636 in which a variable motion cylinder 11 transfers sheets to an impression cylinder 10, the sheets are fed by tapes 18 over a table 12 supported by a cross member 20 which is secured to frame members 13, 14 in a manner which permits of the angularity of the member 20 to be adjusted in a horizontal plane. The members 13, 14 are fitted with ledges 19 to which the member 20 is clamped when adjusted, the width of the member being less than the distance between the inner ends of the frames 13, 14. A bar 21 on the frame 20 projects at each end from the frames and by means of screws 23, nuts 24 and studs 25 the position of the frame can be adjusted with the aid of indicating devices. The frame is then secured laterally by screws 30, and is clamped to the ledges of the frames by clamps 23 operated by screw-mechanism. In the front of the member 29 a shaft 40 is mounted and to the shaft a number of brackets 41, Fig. 4, and 41', Fig. 5, are secured to which are connected flexible sheet stops 42, 42<SP>1</SP>. The shaft 40 is oscillated by a crank 44, link 45, and lever 46 from a cam 50 driven from the machine to which the sheets are fed, and when the highest part A of the cam 50 engages the lever 46 the stops 42, 42<SP>1</SP> all engage the front of the table 12 and the sheet is stopped by engagement with all of the stops. When the part 13 of the cam is in action the stops 42 are moved out of action but the stops 42<SP>1</SP> remain in action owing to the different angular setting of the brackets 41<SP>1</SP> from the setting of the brackets 41. Finally all the stops are moved out of action. The shaft 40 may be fitted with a bracket to which is secured a detecting device which stops the machine in case a sheet is not fed to the stops at the correct time. The table 12 is notched to permit movement of the detector if a sheet is not present, and the detector releases latch mechanism to permit operation of a device for tripping the machine. Specification 529,196 also. is referred to.
