Abstract

528,714. Rotary engines. KEEN, F. H. May 13, 1939, No. 14319. [Class 110 (ii)] A rotor with two humps 12, 13 co-operates, within a stator 15, with three sliding abutments 25, 26, 27. An explosive charge is drawn in at an inlet valve 41, by the hump 13, compressed into a pocket 43 by the hump 12 and exploded behind it. The abutment 27 is raised to its extreme position by the hump and is retained there during the expansion period by a cam-controlled detent 32. The abutment 26 is similarly held by a detent 32 during the induction and compression periods. The disposition of the humps and the abutments provides for a compression ratio of, say, 6 to 1 and an expansion ratio of. say, 20 to 1. The sides of the humps and of the abutments have spring packings 23, 24, 31 and the contracting surfaces of the humps have spring packings 22 of a cross formation. The centre of the rotor may be formed as an axial flow fan to provide a current of cooling air. Several equal motors may be arranged on one shaft. A rotor with one hump can be arranged to produce the same cycle in two revolutions.
