Abstract

[Classes 79 (i), 79 (ii), 79 (iv) and 79 (v)] An agricultural vehicle with high ground clearance comprises a steering axle 7 and a driving axle 10 each provided at its ends with downward extensions 111, 11a, 12, 12a, mounted on stub axles 14 of the wheels 13, the tops of the wheels being below both the axles. In the construction shown the chassis frame comprises longitudinals 5, 5a, 6 and transverse members 7, 8, 9 provided with the downwards extensions 11, 11a, 12, 12a, the member 7 constitutes the front or steering axle. The 'rear wheels are driven through a differential gear 10a and bevel gear-boxes 15, 15a, 16, 16a, and all four wheels are steered, the rear steering-arms being connected to the front ones by links 20, 20a. The front stub axles 14 have king-pins 17, 17a slidable under spring control in the extensions 11, 11a which are stayed to the frame by struts 11b. The rear extensions 12, 12a swivel for steering in rings 19 secured to the frame by struts 21, 22. In order to vary the wheel track the frame longitudinal 5a connected to the extensions 11a, 12a is adjustable laterally of the vehicle, and for this purpose is secured to channel members 23, 24, 25 slidable in the main frame members 7, 8, 9. This adjustment is effected by means of screws 26, 27, after which the channels 23, 24, 25 are bolted to the members 7, 8, 9. The driving gear remains unaffected by this movement as the gearbox slides on its driving shaft 28. Chain driving gear may be employed instead of bevel gearing, and all four wheels may be laterally adjustable to vary the wheel track, or the wheels may be arranged inside the downward axle extensions for this purpose. According to the Provisional Specification (1) the chassis frame or the axle extensions may be articulated to allow for distortion on uneven ground, and (2) the invention may be applied to three-wheeled vehicles, a single steering wheel mounted in a fork being substituted for the steering axle in downward extensions and wheels.
