Abstract
527,952. Wrapping-machines. BRONANDER, W. B. April 24, 1939, No. 12299. [Class 94 (i)] The machine wraps articles to form packages of the block-ended type shown in Fig. 18, a portion 87 of the wrapper being arranged to project to form a tab for opening, The articles X, Fig. 3, are fed. from the base of a hopper 33 by cross-rods 36 on endless chains 37, and travel over a table 30 towards the position at which they receive a wrapper. Heat-sealing material is drawn from a roll S by feed rolls 62, 63 and passes downwards between knives 80, 82 and a gap 32 between the tables 30, 31. A length is severed when the article has engaged the forward end of the web, and is carried by the article into the folding mechanism. The knives are shaped so that the end of the wrapper has a projection 87, and are mounted for timing adjustment. The article passes over the table 31 and beneath a wall 100, which fold the wrapper on to the forward end, top and bottom, leaving portions extending laterally and rearwardly. Further travel is effected by members 135, on endless chains 136, having a U-shaped extension 141 which passes between the upper and lower rearward extensions of the wrapper, and engages the rear face of the article. The folds 116 are formed by tuckers 115, Figs. 6 and 7, slots 117, 118 receiving the flaps F<SP>1</SP>, F<SP>2</SP>. These flaps are folded downwards and upwards respectively by slots 123, 126, and adhesion is effected by a heating element 130. All the parts are adjustable to allow articles of different sizes to be wrapped. Brackets 106, 107, Fig. 7, are mounted on spindles 110 having right- and lefthand screw threads 108, 109. The spindles are connected by sprocket and chain connections 111, 112, 113 and can be simultaneously rotated by a crank 114 to adjust the side walls 104, 105 and the package supports 102, 103. The wall 100 and parts 119 are vertically adjustable. Alternative methods of feeding the article through the folding mechanism may comprise endless bands mounted above the wall 100 having pushers projecting through slots, and moving at a speed greater than that of the chain 37. After passing the element 130, the wrapper is now in the form shown in Fig. 16. The end folding takes place on a table C, Figs. 1 and 3, on to which the packet is fed so that the forward end rests against a rail 150. A feed member 191, Fig. 5, pushes the packet towards a folder 163 to form the fold 161 with an accelerating speed which finally becomes the same as that of lugs 151 on feed chains 153. Rotary tuckers 165 turn down the fold 160, and the flaps 140, 145 are turned down by slots 170, 171, to complete the packet.
