Abstract
470,804. Wrapping-machines. BUREN, J. VAN. Dec. 15, 1936, No. 34431. [Class 94 (i)] Articles such as cakes of soap are wrapped in a double wrapper secured along one edge and at the ends of the article. The folding apparatus comprises a pocket adapted to receive an article and wrapper between spaced walls thereof, and to move them laterally on to a support with the side walls of the pocket normal to the direction of movement, the advance wall of the pocket carrying means to engage, during the lateral movement, with end portions of the wrapper of a previously fed article on the support, and to fold said portions. Feeding wrappers. Two wrappers are applied simultaneously. The outer wrapper, Fig. 3, has five sections A ... E, of which the sections A, C cover the faces of the article, and B, E form the outer covers for the edges, the part E being folded over the part D on one edge. The parts outside the fold lines X, X and Y, Y form the end folds. The inner wrapper F, G does not extend over the ends of the article and is slightly shorter than the outer wrapper. The outer wrapper is fed from a roll by feed rolls 83, 84, Fig. 9, to guides 85, 86, in which they are engaged by pins 87 mounted on chains 88 and projecting through perforations in the web. A further pair of feed rolls 101, 102 feeds the web between guides 103, 104, at the bottom of which it is cut by a rotary knife 105 coacting with a stationary knife 107. The knife 105 is carried by a roll 110 on a shaft 106 and having lugs 111, 112, Fig. 10, which, as the web is being cut, push a plate 1071 backwards against spring action. When released, the plate springs back and prevents the paper from sticking to the knife 107 and facilitates feeding it to rolls 121, 122 where it is assembled with the inner wrapper. The inner wrapper is fed from a magazine H<1> by rolls 115 ... 118 to a guide 119, 120 to a position where it is engaged and fed with the outer wrapper by the rolls 121 .. 123, mounted on a bracket 126 and adjustable by means of a pinion 128 and rack 127. These rolls and the knife 105 are driven by a " fast and slow " driving connection. The wrappers now rest on supports 145 in the path of the article to be wrapped. The articles to be wrapped are fed into the machine on an endless belt 30, Fig. 9, against a stop plate 54 which arrests the leading one and positions it for feeding on to a support 65 by a plate 56. The support rises and the article engages the wrappers which are folded down over the sides by walls 150, 151 of a folding pocket, Fig. 11. During this movement, the top is engaged by a sliding plate 154 forming the top of the pocket and the upper end tucks are formed by folders 152, 153, Figs. 11 and 12, carried by the wall 151. The support 65 is lowered and a rotating spindle 195 moves to the left, Fig. 11, and turns up the edge D against the bottom edge of the article. The rotation of the spindle causes a tight fold to be made, and the pocket moves to the left to place the article on a support 199, which folds up the edge E to cover the edge D. Folders 211, Figs. 11 and 13, are now raised to form the lower end tucks, leaving the broad flaps H, I, J, K projecting. The wall 151 and its associated parts are now raised by its support 155 and returned to its receiving position, the article being retained in its position by a spring-actuated hook 260. During the forwarding of the next article to be wrapped by the pocket, plates 204, 205, projecting forwardly from the plate 151, engage the broad flaps H, I of the preceding packet and fold them down as shown in Fig. 19, so that they underlie the flaps J, K turned down by the movement of the packet past folders 202, 203 in the sides of the guideway. Heating elements 276, Fig. 19, and 277 Fig. 11 ensure adhesion of the wrapper. The completed packets are fed away by a delivery conveyer. In a modified construction of folding box, the top plate 154 is replaced by a plate mounted independently of the pocket and not moving with it. By these means the plate can be returned to receiving position before the pocket has returned to expedite regaining the receiving position. All the parts of the machine are driven by a chain engaged by a sprocket on the main drive, and engaging sprockets on the various countershafts.
