Abstract
527,391. Acetylene. I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES. April 11, 1939, No. 10951. Convention date, April 12, 1938. [Class 2 (i)] In a process for preparing acetylene by treating calcium carbide with a limited amount of water so that the calcium hydroxide formed is obtained essentially in the dry state, further carbide is added to the reaction mixture shortly before the end of the process in order to remove excess of moisture. Any undecomposed pieces of carbide still contained in the residue which have not been used in drying the hydroxide are separated for instance by screening. The amount of further carbide added may be automatically regulated in dependence on the content of moisture in the mixture of carbide and hydroxide. For instance when a certain maximum limit of moisture has been obtained as detected by electric contacts an electric circuit is closed to start the device for additionally charging the generator with carbide.
