527,191. Retractable undercarriages. BOUL- ,TON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and NORTH, J. D. April 3, 1939, No. 10374. [Class 4] In retractable undercarriages of the kind in which the landing wheel is turned through a rightangle about a diameter while it is being swung backwardly and upwardly into a housing such as a recess in an engine nacelle, additional bearing is provided at or near the lower end of the undercarriage leg by a triangular pyramidal, or conical supporting structure hinged at its upper end to the aircraft frame. As shown in Fig. 2, the wheel is carried by a plunger 12 telescopically mounted under elastic and damping restraint in a cylinder 10. Struts 22 are connected to a collar 32 and a horizontal tubular member 20 having journals 40 for pivoting to the framework. The collar 32 and a collar 24 on the member 20 are provided with thrust and journal ball bearings on the cylinder 10. A toothed wheel or sector secured to the cylinder meshes with a similar element mounted on a shaft that passes through one end of the member 20 and is secured to the framework. The cylinder 10 may be locked in the operative position of the wheel by an hydraulicallycontrolled bolt.
