An aircraft undercarriage leg has a cylinder T (Fig. 1) on which wheels are mounted and which is partially retracted within a casing J during undercarriage retraction by a rod 3 pivoted to a crank 4. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the undercarriage is retracted by extending a jack 21 thus putting a bar 16 in tension and rotating the casing J about a pivot 1. The bar 16 is connected to a shaft 15 mounted on the easing, so that as the casing rotates, a lever 13 rotates relative to it, as does a lever 10 in the direction f1 (Fig. 3), rotating the crank 4 in the same direction and withdrawing the cylinder T into the casing. The lever end of the rod 3 is connected to a piston 2 about which the cylinder T may slide when the aircraft is on the ground. In a modification (Figs. 8 and 9), the undercarriage is raised by shortening the jack 21 and the rotation of the bar 16 relative to the casing is transmitted through a member 16a pivoted at 15 to the lever 13. The upper end of the shaft is pressed against an abutment B in the down position with a force which can be varied by adjusting the relative positions of the bar 16 and the member 16a.
