Abstract
741,467. Aircraft undercarriages. SOC. D'INVENTIONS AERONAUTIQUES ET MECANIQUES S.I.A.M. Dec. 4, 1953 [Aug. 14, 1953], No. 33828/53. Class 4. In an aircraft undercarriage in which the wheel is rotated through a predetermined angle about the longitudinal axis of the undercarriage, the leg 1, which is retracted about the axis A-A in the direction of arrow f<SP>1</SP> by shortening of the jack V, encloses a rotatable cylinder 3 which houses a shock-absorber 4 and is connected to the axle of the wheel 6. The upper end of the cylinder 3 is formed with forks 7 to carry a pivot pin 9 on an axis which is normal to and intersects the longitudinal axis of the leg 1, an arm 10 being pivotally mounted at one end on the pin 9 and at the other end in an elbow member 11 connected to a shaft 12 concentric with the axis A-A and connected to a lever 13 rigidly fixed to the structure of the aircraft. Consequently when the undercarriage is retracted the elements 7, 9, 10 and 11 act as a swash-plate mechanism to cause the tube 3 and the wheel 6 to rotate about the axis of the leg 1 from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position of Fig. 3. In a further embodiment (Figs. 4-6, not shown) wherein provision is made for shimmy damping and steering movements of the undercarriage, the member 11, instead of being fast with the aircraft structure, constitutes the operating arm of hydraulic steering motor.
