Abstract

525,214. Plug valves. ANDALE CO. Feb. 16 1939, No. 5132. Convention date, Feb. 17, 1938, Nos. 5132. [Class 135] [Also in Groups XIII and XXXIV] A lubricating system for the bearings 13, Fig. 1, of a turbine &c. 12 includes an oil tank 14 from which oil is forced by a pump 15 through a' pipe 16 to one end of a hand-operated plug valve 17 by which oil is directed through pipes 33, 35, to either, or simultaneously to both, of the coolers 18, 19 each of which is provided with an air vent 31 and a drain 32, the oil returning to the opposite end of the valve through pipes 34, 36 and thence passing through a pipe 20 to the bearings. The coolers are of the kind comprising tubes extending between end headers, the upper of which is provided with cooling water inlet and outlet pipes 27, 30 respectively, and enclosed by a casing through which the oil is circulated. The valve, Figs. 3, 4, comprises vertically spaced discs 52, 53, with separating partitions 55, 56, the former with an extension 57, the whole forming a conical plug. In the upper part of the valve, an inlet 58 is connected to the supply, and outlets 59, 60 to connections 37, 38 leading to the coolers. In the lower part of the valve, a main outlet port 61 is connected to pipe 20 extending to the bearings, and a pair of ports 62, 63 are connected to the discharge pipes from the coolers. In a modification, Fig. 8, not shown, the coolers are submerged in an oil bath, which may constitute the oil supply for the system. The valve, Fig. 9, has an arrangement of ports similar to that of Figs. 3, 4, but is inverted, and a spring 88 is provided to keep the valve pressed into its seating. The spindle 90 carries a toothed segment 91 rotated by a pinion 92 mounted on a hand-actuated shaft 93, which is extended outside the casing of the apparatus and may carry an indicator. Byepass ports such as 96 may be provided for drainage and venting of the apparatus.
