Abstract

524,750. Rail tractors. KING, Ltd., G. W, and KING, H. W. M. Feb. 6, 1939, No. 3870. [Classes 79 (i) and 79 (ii)] A rail tractor has two sets of roller members 27, 32 engaging two running surfaces 34, 35 of a fixed track 33, one set of rollers 27 being driven by a motor 11 and being provided with grooves or recesses therein to receive the edge portion of the appropriate running surface and to provide a gripping or wedge action thereon. In the construction shown the rollers have V grooves to engage the flanges of the track 33 and the idler rollers 32 are mounted on spring- loaded arms 30 pivoted at 31 to the tractor frame 29, so that the track is gripped between the two sets of rollers and the tractor can be readily disengaged from the track by pulling the arms 30 to one side. The motor 11 is secured to a plate 10 of the tractor frame and its shaft 12 drives two driving rollers 26, 27 through gearing 14, 15 and a pinion 19 meshing with two gears 20 21, on the roller shafts. The driving and/or idler rollers may each have a slidable flange pressed towards the other flange by an adjustable spring to allow for different thicknesses of track members. The idler rollers may be adjustable to provide for different widths of track. Safety means such as hooks may be provided to retain the tractor on the track if the rollers become disengaged therefrom, and automatic brakes such as those used on lifts may be provided to prevent the tractor running back on inclines. The motor may be horizontal or above the track or in any intermediate position. A towing connection 44 is provided at either or each end of the tractor, and the motor, which is preferably electric, may be remotely controlled.
