[Class 40 (i)] [Also in Group XXVII] Detonation vibrations in an internal combustion engine are detected by a pick-up converting the vibrations into electrical variations which are passed through a filter to remove frequencies outside the usual range of detonation frequencies, amplified and shown on an indicator, the pick-up being connected only during that portion of the cycle in which detonation occurs, to avoid operation by valve vibration &c. The connection of the pick-up may be effected by a contact on the crankshaft or by a relay operated by ignition current, the pick-up being disconnected by a sluggish relay or by ignition current in another cylinder. Differentiation between detonations and other vibrations may be made by using pressure or temperature differences for connecting up the pick-up, or the amplifier may be non-linear so that it is unresponsive to small amplitudes.
