Abstract
524,047. Recording-apparatus. FOSTER INSTRUMENT CO., Ltd., and FOSTER, C. E. Jan. 20, 1939, No. 2028: [Class 106 (iv)] In recording instruments of the kind in which the recording arm is periodically depressed to mark the record chart means are provided for automatically impressing upon the moving system of the instrument a mechanical force for the purpose of bringing the moving system to its true position of deflection to eliminate the error due to pivot roll or " stiction," i.e. static friction. In the form shown the moving coil 3 of the instrument has conically pointed pivots 5 mounted in conical recesses of jewel bearings 7. The coil 3 carries a counterweighted recording arm 8 with a flat spring portion 11 and a stylus 9 that co-operates with a translucent chart 4 arranged in front of a carbon paper 18 and support plate 19. The stylus 9 is depressed against the chart periodically by a pivoted spring controlled presser bar 12 under the action of a cam 14. To avoid the error due to pivot roll the cam 14 is provided with a depression 20 which moves the presser bar and stylus up to the chart smoothly so as to settle the pivots in the bearing recesses. If the instrument is of the multiple record type for association with two or more sensitive devices the change-over of connections takes place at a suitable point in the cam cycle, conveniently before the gradual or non-marking depression is effected.
