Abstract
523,736. Fungicides &c. ROHM & HAAS CO. Jan. 13, 1939, No. 1193. Convention date, Feb. 11, 1938. [Class 81 (i)] [Also in Group III] Finely divided cuprous oxide is stabilized against oxidation by treatment with a lyophillic protein, in particular glue, so as to provide a thin coating on the individual particles. The treated oxide is suitable for use as a spray or dusting fungicide or as a pigment for antifouling paints. The protein is applied by mixing glue solution with moist cuprous oxide, evaporating the water and pulverizing the resulting cake. The proportions of the protein may be between 0.05 per cent. and 2 per cent. by weight of the cuprous oxide. A stable gel containing cuprous oxide in suspension may be prepared by using larger amounts of glue in a fairly concentrated hot solution and cooling the mixture, the product being readily soluble in water. It is stated that less soluble proteins or proteins rendered soluble by alkalies have a lesser protective effect. Specification 489,222 is referred to.
