Abstract

523,203. Lubricating systems. NOETZEL, E. Dec. 28, 1938, No. 37643. Convention date, March 16, 1938. [Class 12 (iii)] In a lubricating system of the dry sump type for internal combustion engines, in which one or more scavenging pumps draw oil from the engine crank case and deliver it to a tank from whence it is drawn by another pump and passed to the engine, the scavenging pump or pumps are of the centrifugal type which will pump oil but not air. By this means the production of foam in the lubricating system is avoided. In one form a centrifugal scavenging pump is placed at each of the four corners of the engine oil sump each pump having a larger capacity than the pump supplying the engine. In a modification the engine sump 1 has a channel 15 in which are located two worms 16, 17, of opposite pitch, driven in suitable fashion. Oil passing to the worms is conveyed to the centre of the sump where a centrifugal scavenging pump 18 is provided. A plurality of channels 15 may be provided.
