Abstract
522,764. Friction clutches. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. Dec. 15, 1938, No. 36604. Convention date, Feb. 9. [Class 80 (ii)] In a plate clutch, each of a number of circumferentially - spaced radially-disposed flexible metal plates 30 is connected at its outer end to the cover plate 2, secured to the driving flywheel 1, and is connected at its inner end to the pressure plate 13, whereby the latter is driven and centred while being capable of axial movement. Circumferentially-spaced coil springs 15 arranged between the plates 2 and 13 produce clutch engagement, each plate 30 having a central aperture 40 or a cut-out portion in each of its side edges through which one of the springs 15 extends, while disengagement is effected through levers 17 which may have weighted extensions 21 acting centrifugally to augment the engaging spring pressure. The cover plate 2 is of triangular form, the chordal sides 6 being arched to bridge the plate 13 and being formed with radial flanges 9. As shown in Fig. 5, each plate 30 is riveted to one of the flanges 9 and has riveted to its inner end a pair of pins 35 detachably fitting in apertures 34 formed in lugs 33 on the inner periphery of the plate 13. Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 2, the plates 30 may be riveted to the lugs 33 and be detachably bolted to the flanges 9. The walls 6 flex slightly during axial movement of the plate 13.
