The segments are formed by radial slots 11 extending to the periphery of the disc or into straight or arcuate slots 22, Fig. 6, their inner ends opening into straight or arcuate slots 12. The friction faces 16 are secured to alternate segments by one or two rivets 17 passing through tongues 14 formed by V-shaped slots 15, which may be widened to render the sector more flexible. The securing action slightly bends up the tongues, flattens the sectors, and bends them bodily at the narrow necks 10'. The extent of the bend at the neck is directly proportional to the inclination of the side edges 13 of the sectors, which can be so arranged that the facings are parallel both when disengaged and under pressure. In the form shown in Fig. 7, the outer periphery of the sectors is bent to a shorter radius than is required for the previously mentioned condition, so that the friction faces are initially relatively inclined and their outer peripheries make first contact with the driving- member, so as to give a gradual increase of contact radially as the engaging pressure increases.
