Abstract

522,554. Flywheels. CHANDLER, N. R. Dec. 16, 1938, Nos. 36659/38 and 9072/39. [Class 122 (i)] A flywheel, particularly for an internalcombustion engine, comprises a weighted rim connected to the shaft by a flexible metal disc which decreases in thickness as the distance from the axis of the shaft increases. Fig. 2 shows a disc D which decreases progressively in thickness in inverse proportion to the cube root of the distance from the axis of the shaft. The weighted rim comprises two integral parts E, E<2>, the former carrying teeth E<1> to engage the pinion of the engine starting motor, and the latter projecting inwardly to form an abutment for a clutch plate. Fig. 3 shows a laminated disc H, the side discs of which are preferably slightly dished and formed with gapped peripheries, whilst the weighted rim comprises two separate parts E, E<2> bolted together at G<1>. In a further modification, the disc is cut to form spokes which decrease in width and/or thickness outwardly from the axis. Two or all three of the above features may be embodied in the disc.
