Abstract

488,389. Turning - gear. URAL MASCHINENTVERTRIEBS-GES. April 30, 1937, No. 12341. Convention date, May 2, 1936. [Class 7 (v)] A hand - actuated engine starter comprises a casing 23 enclosing a driving member 5 connected to the casing by a return spring 6, a driven member 10 consisting of a drum secured to the engine shaft 9, and an elastic steel band 8 surrounding the drum and secured at its ends to the driving member 5 and to a member 12 engaged by a spring-pressed braking piston 14 carried by the casing. The member 12 rotates upon a flange 21 in the casing. The member 5 is actuated by a hand-crank 2, or by pulling a rope 4 wound on the member, and the band 8 contracts upon and drives the drum 10, but is expanded and released if the engine turns backwards on starting. In modifications, the brake 14 is replaced by (a) a spring connected at its ends to the casing and to a ring similar to 12, or (b) a weighted fan brake geared to a ring such as 12.
