520,167. Beryllium compounds ; silicofluorides. GES. ZUR VERWERTUNG CHEMISCH TECHNISCHER VERFAHREN AKT.-GES.. and OPATOWSKI, R. S. Oct. 13, 1938, No. 29725. Convention date, Oct. 13, 1937. [Class 1 (iii)] Beryllium compounds are obtained from its earths and especially from beryl, beryllium aluminium silicate by calcining the ore with a mixture of sodium or other alkali fluosilicate and sodium or other alkali hydroxide or carbonate so as to promote a reaction of the type Na 2 CO 3 + 2Na 2 SiF 6 + 3BeOÀAl 2 O 3 À6SiO 2 = 3Na 2 BeF 4 -4- 8Si0 2 + Al 2 O 3 + CO 2 or 2NaOH +2Na 2 SiF 6 -I- 3BeOÀAl 2 O 3 À6SiO 2 =3Na 2 BeF 4 +8SiO 2 +Al 2 O 3 +H 2 O. The ore and the fluosilicate and hydroxide are mixed and granulated or formed into blocks and calcined between 600‹ and 750‹ C., the sintered product is lixiviated with hot water and the alkali fluoberyllate solution precipitated by the addition of sodium hydroxide or carbonate to give beryllium hydroxide or carbonate. The fluorine contained in the solution as alkali fluoride. after precipitation of the beryllium hydroxide or carbonate, is recovered in the form of fluosilicate by adding to the solution finely divided silica or a silicate and an acid, the alkali fluosilicate being separated by decantation.
