520,103. Insecticides. KILGORE, L. B. Oct. 26, 1938, No. 30988. [Class 81 (i)] Rotenone and other compounds with insecticidal properties are extracted from rotenonebearing plants by means of an ester of the class # e-unsaturated-a, γ-diketo carboxylic esters of the general formula in which R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are the same or different organic radicles or one organic radicle and one hydrogen atom, R<SP>4</SP> is an alkyl radicle or a hydrogen atom and R<SP>3</SP> is any organic radicle forming an ester with a corboxyl group. Examples of suitable esters are the ethyl, n-butyl, iso-butyl, sec.-amyl, cyclohexyl, and tetrahydrofurfuryl esters of mesityl oxide oxalate; the n-butyl ester of acetalacetone oxalate, the ethyl ester of n-butyralacetone oxalate, the ethyl ester of 3-methyl-3-pentene-2-one-oxalate, the ethyl ester of 3-methyl-3-hepterie-2- one-oxalate and the ethyl of tetrahydroacetophenone oxalate. The extraction may be carried out in an inert atmosphere. The extract may be concentrated and dissolved in a liquid hydrocarbon. Specification 495,183 is referred to.
