Abstract

520,089. Winches. CORRIE & CO., Ltd., J. B., and CORRIE, B. J. B. Oct. 12, 1938, No. 29522. [Class 45] [Also in Groups XXIV and XXX] In winch devices, such as fence wire strainers, in which a ratchet wheel on the winding drum shaft is controlled by a pawl, the pawl has a sliding movement and imparts its stress reaction directly to the frame of the winch. The Figure shows a pawl 42 provided with an elongated medial slot 47 which takes over the drum shaft. A lug 48 on the pawl projects forward to engage the ratchet teeth 38, and a dug 46 projects rearward to lie in a notch 22 in the frame side 24. When the ratchet wheel turns in an anticlockwise direction the teeth 38 raise the pawl by the lug 48, the pawl dropping by gravity as each tooth passes. Pressure by the wheel in the clockwise direction is taken up by the pawl and imparted directly to the face 44 of the notch 22. In another form the notch 22, is located at the bottom of the frame 24, the lug 46 being correspondingly situated. In a further modification, the notch is arranged so that both lugs are in lime, and in a specific form of this modification the pawl is located between the drum and the frame side 24 so that a single lug projects outward to lie in the notch 22 and to engage the ratchet teeth.
