Abstract

519,181. Photographic contact - printing apparatus. MORSE, S. H. Sept. 15, 1938, No. 26895. [Class 98 (ii)] Variable speed driving mechanism for contact-printing apparatus comprises a friction disc connected with the source of power, for example an electric motor, and a friction disc at rightangles to the first-mentioned disc engaging with its peripheral edge the plane surface of the firstmentioned disc, the second-mentioned disc being mounted upon a shaft 'transmitting through gearing the drive to the part of the apparatus to be driven, the second-mentioned disc being held against the face of the first-mentioned disc by the load applied to the shaft or shafts. As shown, the plane surface of the friction disc e mounted on the shaft d of an electric motor c is engaged by the peripheral edge of a friction disc f keyed to and slidable on the shaft g carrying a pulley t transmitting the drive through a belt a, a second pulley v, reduction gearing w, and a chain or belt to the rollers carrying the endless band or bands drawing the sensitive material and tracings round the outside of an internally illuminated glass drum. One end of a fork l engages a grooved collar n secured to the disc f and the other end is supported on a guide rod o. The centre is secured to a rod m provided at one end with a toothed rack p engaged by a pinion q on a rod r provided with a knob s, rotation of which accordingly varies the speed and alters the direction of the drive. A shaft 4 driven from the pulley 6 on the motor shaft d carries pulleys 9 driving fans mounted in the ends of the glass drum through belts. The bearing h<1> for the shaft g can move slightly by reason of the slots j and the pull of the driving belt u moves the shaft g to pull the friction disc f against the face of the friction disc a. The driving mechanism may also be applied to apparatus of the kind in which both the band and the glass drum are rotated. A second friction drive on a doubleshafted motor may be provided for twin contact-printing machines.
