Abstract

519,093. Engine and like crossheads. GASKELL & CHAMBERS, Ltd., and WEIGHTMAN, J. S. Sept. 26, 1938, No. 27963. [Class 122 (i)] To facilitate cleansing, and to prevent interference of the working action due to warping of wood, the piston rod 12 of a bar engine is attached to a crosshead 11 which is guided by a rod 17 -formed on or attached to the end cap 14 of the cylinder 5. As shown the rod 17 is screwed into the cap and secured by a nut 18. The rod is preferably of circular crosssection, but it may be formed with flat sides to receive a spanner. The piston rod 12 passes through a stuffing-box 13 on the cap, and is provided with a conical head 27 secured to the crosshead by a gland nut. The crosshead is formed with an extension 23, 24 having an aperture which slides on the rod 17, and a lubricant passage 25. The crosshead is preferably operated by a single link 10 connected to the crosshead by a forked member 19 and a pivot '21 passing through a lug 20 on the crosshead.
