Abstract
518,801. Motor vehicles with folding heads. ABBOTT. Ltd., E. D., and HIGTON, J. W. Oct. 10, 1938, No. 29361. [Class 108 (i)] To enable the folding head to collapse below the 'level of the waist line of the body, the folding pillars at the rear of the door are displaced inwardly of the vehicle when they are folded rearwardly. The lower portion 2 of the folding pillar is secured to the side of the body by a plate 4, bent inwardly and then rearwardly and finally inwardly, the first two 'bends forming a channel having a transverse pin 13 on which is pivoted a sheet metal extension of the upper foldable part of the pillar. Cams 8, 12 ensure that, on folding, the upper part moves inwardly to clear the side of the body and enable the whole folding top to be concealed behind the waist of the body. The rear bracket 33 is pivoted to a bell-crank lever 34 linked to the fixed portion of the pillar, and an intermediate bracket 38 pivoted to a lever 39 the other end of which is fixed; this construction causing the brackets 33, 38 to move forwards and downwards as the head is folded.
