Abstract

518,302. Concentrating coal. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. Sept. 23, 1938, No. 27739. Convention date, Nov. 5, 1937. [Class 82 (ii)] In the froth flotation concentration of coal the coal is conditioned with a collecting agent, with or without a frothing agent, in an aqueous pulp of a density greatly in excess of that normally used in froth flotation, e.g. more than 50 per cent. and preferably about 65 per cent. solids. The pulp is then diluted to about 20-25 per cent. solids and subjected to froth flotation. The collector is preferably a petroleum hydrocarbon such as kerosene; the frother, when used, may be, for example, cresylic acid but is preferably a mixture of aliphatic alcohols of 7-10 carbon atoms and saturated hydrocarbons as described in Specification 446,418.
