517,801. Speedometers. PRACISIONS MECHANISCHE UND OPTISCHE ANSTALT F. SUSS AKT.-GES., and KELER, T. VON. Feb. 27, 1939, No. 6363. Convention date, Feb. 25, 1938. [Class 106 (iii)] In a speed indicator the shaft 1 whose speed is to be measured drives a worm wheel 2 which displaces a screw bolt 3 in the direction of its length. The bolt is rotated by a wheel 4 engaging with a disc 5 rotating with predetermined speed. As the shaft 1 moves the bolt the gearing relation between wheel 4 and disc 5 changes until the speed of rotation of the bolt is such that the longitudinal motion of the bolt due to the engagement of its screw threads with wheel 2 is sufficient to counterbalance the straightforward longitudinal shift due to the rotation of wheel 2. This position of the bolt is characteristic of the particular speed of shaft 1 and thus indicating means connected to bolt 3 will show the speed. The disc 5 may be driven by change speed gearing 8 in order that the scale of motion of the indicator may be modified if desired.
