Abstract
517,521. Pipe couplings. SLINGSBY & CO., Ltd., W., SLINGSBY, W., SLINGSBY, W. N. and SLINGSBY, T. J. L. July 20, 1938, No. 21488. [Class 99 (i)] [Also in Groups XI and XXIX] In a detachable coupling for mounting a gas lamp fitting 2 on an inaccessible gas supply member 5 the gas pipes 3, 4 on the fitting and member are sealed by a liquid when the lamp is in its operative position and means are provided to prevent the escape of gas when the parts are separated. In the construction shown, on the cord 7, which passes around pulleys 2a, 2b on the lamp fitting, being pulled the lamp fitting is raised to cause mercury contained in a cup 2d on the lamp fitting to surround the lower edge of the pipe 4 and to lift a plug 9 closing the top of the pipe 4 out of a liquid seal cup 5a on the member 5. Gas can then pass to the fitting 2 through apertures 3b in the pipe 3. The fitting is supported in the raised position by projections 10a on a ball 10 carried by the member 5 engaging recesses 11a in a member 11 rotatable on the fitting. As the fitting is raised the projections 10a engage triangular projections 11f on the member 11 and the member 11 turns to allow the projections 10a to enter gap 11e between the projections 11f. The member 11 is further rotated when the projections 10a engage inclined surfaces 11g. When the fitting is lowered the projections 10a engage in the recesses 11a. When the fitting is again raised the member 11 is similarly turned to bring the gaps 11e opposite the projections 10a and the fitting can then be lowered to an accessible position. To ensure all the projections 10a engaging on similarly inclined sides of the projection 11f one of the projections 11f is slightly higher than the others. The member 8 to which one end of the cord 7 is attached and which carries a pulley 8a from which the cord is led to a securing post is adjustable angularly on the member 10. In a modification the plug 9 and sealing cup 5a are replaced by a ball valve which is displaced from its seating in the member 5 by an apertured member at the top of the pipe 3. Ribs are provided inside the member 5 to limit the displacement of the ball valve.
