Abstract
516,616. Aircraft. WESTLAND AIRCRAFT, Ltd., WIDGERY, W. M., and PAINE, W. H. April 22, 1938, No. 12139 [Class 4] In an aircraft wing having a duct with a forward opening, for cooling air or other purposes, a slat is provided immediately above the entrance to the duct, the duct entrance being substantially unrestricted by ' the opening and closing of the slat. The slat may be formed partly from the upper lip of the duct. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the slat a is supported by two curved arms d carried on rollers e. The slat is pivotally mounted at h and an adjustable locking device is provided. In Fig. 1, the slat a is shown interconnected through the linkage k, m, n with a rearwardly displaceable flap p, for simultaneous operation. The slat a may also be operated in combination with other forms of flap or with wing-tip flaps. In one form a rearwardly moving flap actuates a hydraulic valve to cause first the opening and then the closing of the slat as the flap moves rearwardly. The slat may extend to each side of and be in part formed of the upper lip of a circular or oval duct entrance.
