Abstract

516,231. Casting-machines. BIRMINGHAM ALUMINIUM CASTING (1903) CO., Ltd., and PRITCHARD, P. June 18, 1938, Nos. 18137 and 18138. [Class 83 (i)] Moulds.-In casting metal by gas pressure into a mould 14 placed directly over the heated pot 12, the metal is caused to flow through a nozzle 13 of such dimensions that it remains molten after the casting has set, the gas pressure being maintained until this occurs. The pot 12 is heated by gas or oil burners 18, and is connected to a reservoir 3 by a pipe 6 provided with a shut off valve 7, a valve 8, by which it can be exhausted, and a needle regulating valve 10. The reservoir 3 is filled with compressed air by a main 1, the pressure being indicated by a gauge 5 and regulated to desired value by an adjustable safety valve 4. When the pot is at the correct temperature air or other gas is admitted to cause the metal to flow into the mould slowly and thus avoid oxide inclusion. The speed is indicated by a manometer 11 and controlled by the valve 10. When the mould is full the metal seals an air vent in the top of the mould and the pressure in the pot rises to that in the ressrvoir 3. When the metal in the mould has set the pressure in the pot is relieved by closing the valve 7 and opening the valve 8 to exhaust. When the casting has two or more parts a, b', Fig. 3, joined by parts of smaller cross section the nozzle 13 broadens at its upper end into a corresponding number of channels 32, 33 which feed the molten metal direct to the larger sections. The mould 26 has core parts 28, 29 and is in two parts connected by hinges or fastenings 27.
