Casting-machines; metal-pouring; moulds. - Casting - apparatus designed to minimize the formation of blow-holes or surface imperfections comprises a mould formed of flasks 3, 1 carrying the cope 4 and drag 2 and having air-tight joints such as are formed by grooves 7 filled with plastic sealing material such as plaster of paris, forced into the grooves by pumps 10, so that air and gases may be exhausted by a pipe 43 from the mould both before and during casting. After casting, a sliding plate valve 42 may be closed and the metal is compressed, preferably by a plunger formed of a ribbed rod 27 coated with refractory material 30, and working in the cylindrical feeding passage 31 of the hopper 25. A sealing groove 31<1> for plastic material is provided in the passage 31, and a draining channel and spout 48 for removing surplus metal from the hopper 25. A thin breakable plate 47 may be provided to act as a, safetyvalve and prevent too great pressure of gas after casting.
