Abstract
475,541. Casting-machines. WAGNER, K. F. Feb. 13, 1937, No. 4338. Convention date, Feb. 13, 1936. [Class 83 (i)] A device for feeding a measured charge of magnesium, zinc, aluminium, or other easily oxidizable metal to the pressure cylinder 21 of a casting-machine is arranged to do this without contact with the air. The crucible 2, which may be partially exhausted, is surrounded by a furnace 1 and has a cover 7 with a chamber 24, Fig. 2, containing boxes 26 of carnallite or the like which evolves a protective gas. A perforated cylinder 3, submerged in the molten magnesium 5, has a plunger 9 moved, through a distance adjustable by nuts 16, by a fluid operated piston 12<1> to force a measured charge into the passage 6. This charge is then delivered to cylinder 21, closed by a cover 31 operated by a piston 33<1>, by a fluid operated plunger 18. The fluid operated plunger 29 then forces the metal into the mould 34 while the plunger 9 returns to the position shown. The cover 31 and plunger 18 are then returned and the residue ejected from the cylinder 21. All the movements may be under one automatic control. The crucible 2 and cylinder 21 may be partly exhausted and supplied with gas poor in oxygen and nitrogen or interconnected. In a modification, the cover 31 is stationary and has a closable opening for ejection of the residue.
