Abstract

360,980. Casting-machines. RAILEY, R. W., 23, Stockport Road, Altrincham, Cheshire. Aug. 15, 1930, No. 24523. [Class 83 (i).] Casting processes ; moulds.-In order to apply external pressure to a steel ingot or other casting 2 as it shrinks on cooling or to vary the rate of cooling or both, lead or other metal a of low melting- point is introduced into the space between the casting 2 and its mould 1 during or after pouring. The level of the metal a in the mould may be varied, as desired, by means of a reservoir 4, controlled by valves 7, 12, and a draw-off device 21 or by a reservoir lower than the mould which can be subjected to any desired pressure by a piston, gas, &c. or in which the liquid level can be varied as by immersing a weight. The level of the metal a in the mould may be observed by means of an alarm or indicator 20 which can be put in operation by opening a valve 15. The pipes 6, 13 and valves 7, 15 must be kept hot as by means of gas jets. The mould may be heated or cooled. by giving it a ribbed formation 52, Fig. 5, and applying an adjustable muff 53 through which air &c. is passed. The upper part 59 of the mould may be lined with refractory material and, if desired, made with double walls for use as a heating chamber.
