Abstract

516,157. Casting concrete walls in situ. WILLSON, L. E. July 15, 1938, No. 21022. [Classes 20 (ii) and 20 (iv)] Shuttering for use in the construction of walls having a base or body of concrete is provided with yielding elements 2 mounted thereon in spaced relation for the purpose of temporarily supporting individual facing slabs or tiles in position on the face of the shuttering, such elements being adapted, after a concrete backing' has been cast against the facing units, to allow 'withdrawal of the shuttering and attached, elements, the facing units being left in position on the wall. The upper and lower edges of the tiles 4 shown in Figs. 1 and 2 are engaged frictionally by a series of parallel strips 2 of rubber or other resilient material. These strips 2 have integral stems 3 which are cemented in grooves in the face of the form 1, and the portions of the strips 2 which project from the face of the form are of laterally tapering crosssection so that the edges of the strips which frictionally engage the tiles 4 are relatively thin so as to permit the strips to be easily flexed for the insertion and removal of the tiles. The tiles are spaced apart between the strips 2 by transverse strips 5 which may be of wood or rubber and removably secured to the form 1 by means such as tongues 5a thereon engaging beneath the edges of the strips 2 ; alternatively, the strips 5 may be permanently secured to the form. The strips 2, 5 may be so constructed that each tile 4 is bounded by a relatively deep groove into which concrete flows when the wall is cast, and the faces of the strips 2 may be convex in order to provide a concave face to the concrete appearing between the tiles. In the modification shown in Fig. 7, a T-shaped resilient strip 42 is secured to the form 10 by nails and is adapted to engage grooves 41 in the edges of the tiles 40. In another form, the resilient strip is provided with a flat face to contact with the face of the shuttering 1, and the opposite face may be tapered at the edges which engage the edge of the tiles. The concrete is cast between the shuttering 1, which is provided with the tiles 4, and a spaced form 7 which may be in the form of a wire-screen through which the concrete is projected by pressure apparatus. If a special colour is desired for the concrete appearing at the joints between the tiles 4, a layer of concrete of the desired colour is first projected through the screen to the desired thickness, followed by the backing of the normal colour. The grooves which are left between the tiles 4 on the exposed face of the wall may be pointed with mortar of any desired colour.
