[Class 132 (iii)] In a machine for applying the feathers to the head of a shuttlecock, the previously drilled head H, Fig. 2, is supported in an axially rotatable holder 13, Figs. 2, 3 and 4, adjacent to a table 52 on which the feather to be inserted is disposed with its shaft between gripper jaws 32, 33. The machine is released by clutching a cam shaft 5 to a constantly rotating shaft 4 for a single revolution. At the beginning of the operation the support 13 is rocked about a shaft 8 from a raised position to that shown, by means of a spring 27 under the control of a cam 26, Fig. 4. and follower 25. The pivoted left-hand gripper jaw 33 is now released by a cam-actuated roller 45 ' to the action of a' spring, whereupon it closes on the fixed right-hand jaw to grip the feather shaft. The jaws are carried by a slide 34 and are moved to the left (as shown in Fig. 2) to enter the feather shaft in the lowermost hole drilled-in the head H whereupon the jaws open to release the feather. The head now rises to remove the feather from between the jaws and is rotated by a cam-actuated pawl 16, co-operating with a ratchet 14, to present the next hole in the head to receive a feather. The above operation is repeated until a feather has-been inserted in each hole, after which the shuttlecock is ejected from the holder by a headed spindle 28 actuated by a hand lever 29. Another head is now positioned in the support by means of a tool, Fig. 5, comprising a sleeve 60 to fit over a.pin 15 extending over the support, the sleeve carrying an arcuate guide 57 to receive the head and a pin 58 to enter one of the holes therein. The angles of the feather shafts to the head may be varied in many ways by adjusting four supporting screws 61, Fig. 3, for the table, by rotating the gripper slide about a vertical axis and by changing the angle of elevation of the support 13.
