Abstract

515,683. Joints for co-axial electric conductors. PIRELLI-GENERAL CABLE WORKS, Ltd., and SOPER, R. E. S. March 7, 1938, No. 7062. [Class 38 (i)] Relates to means for jointing co-axial conductor cables comprising plug and socket elements 6, 7, Fig. 1, connected to the central conductors 23 of the cables and two annular members, 1, 1 connected to the outer conductors 24, 24. According to the invention, the inner and outer connecting members are separated by a pair of washers 2, 3 with an intermediate layer 9 of plastic composition which is forced against both members when the washers are pressed together, for example, by a nut 4, thereby making a tight insulated joint between the two members. The washers may also bear against the bevelled sides of a shoulder 8 on the central member. Further sealing is provided by means of Chatterton's compound at 5. One annular member is surrounded by a union nut 12 adapted to engage screw threads 15 on the other member to fasten the joint together. The union nut is locked in position by a disc formed with a lug for engagement with a notch in the rim 19 of the union nut and with slots for the reception of a set screw screwed into a tapped hole 21 in the annular member 1 on which the threads 15 are formed. The face of one nut 4 is grooved and the face of the other nut 4 provided with a lead insertion 16 to ensure good contact and a tight joint between these nuts. Jointing members of this kind may be provided at the ends of flexible connector cables.
