Description

Sept. 1, 1942. w. A. BRUNO I COUPLING MEANS FOR CABLES Filed June 10, 1941 INVENTOR, W'ILO 0L WWW tends through said insulating washer 8.
Patented Sept. 1, 1942 mesne assignments, to Bruno Patents Inc., Long Island City, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application June io, 1941, Serial No. 397,355
2 Claims.
This invention relates to connecters or coupling means for single conductor shielded cables, and more particularly to connecter's for co-axial "cables. i a
The main object of my invention to provide friction and constriction electrical contacts, and
to produce particularly safe and stable electrical connections between the conductors of the cables.
It is also an object oi my invention to provide coupling accessories for co-axial cables, which can be easily and quickly connected and disconnected, and are capable of providing electrical and gaseous connections in the cable thereby rendering all electrical connections air-tight.
A further object of my invention is to provide a connecter element for shielded (tables, which can be easily fastened on the cable, and which simultaneously forms; electrical connection with the outer conductor.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent from the specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a sectional'view of one embodiment of my invention illustrating a first connecter member fastened at the end of a co-axial cable,-
a'ssembled with a second connecter member, the latter being partly broken away;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the second connecter member shown in Fig. 1 partly broken away, and
Fig. 3 is a diagrammatical illustration of the principle used in my invention.
Referring to Fig. 1, the co-axial cable I shown therein in section, may be of the solid copper tubing type, the braided type or any other form of shielded conductor cable. 2 is the center conductor of the cable, 3, 3' are spacing insulating washers, l is the barrel of the connecter proper, I is the locking nut, and 6 the insulating washer of the connecter. A contact member I, to which the center conductor 2 of the cable I is electrically connected by soldering, for example, ex-
washer 6 is screwed into place, an eyelet 8 makes contact with the outer conductor iii of the coaxial cable. The-connecter barrel 4 may have a slotted tubular extension II which fits into a corresponding annular recess 15 of the receptacle type connecter element shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
An air-tight'joint may be-produced by means of a rubber gasket 0, once the nut is screwed over the cprresponding connecter part.
Inorder to connect the connecter of the male plug typeshown in Fig. l toanjend of a coaxial cable, it is necessary to remove the cotton Once braid cover, if this is present, for about 7;" from the end, for example, thus exposing the conductor braid or solid copper tubing which forms the outer conductor of the cable. The center conductor tube is cut so as to protrude about from the extremity of the cable. Barrel 4 is now made to slide over the end of the cable i to which the connecter is to be fastened,
far enough to allow the exposed outer conductor to protrude just beyond the smaller diameter hole in the connecter barrel 4. When this has been done, eyelet l is inserted over the braid, and insulating washer 6 is screwed into barrel 4, taking care to allow the center conductor to pass through contact member 1. By screwing the insulating washer 8 into place, eyelet 8 will force the outer conductor l0 against the surface of connecter barrel 4, thus forming a good electrical contact.
As further precaution against gas leak, the cable may be introduced into a metal tube ll, if desired, and a tight connection between the end of said metal tube and the barrel may be secured by using conventional coupling means 32, as shown.
The receptacle type connecter shown in Figs. 1 and 2 consists of a metallict-barrel I! having a suitable recess to accommodate an insulating washer, such as shown at It, through which the slotted center contact pin it extends. This contact pin has a recess 38 and receives contact member I when the two connecter parts are assembled, as shown in Fig. 1. According to my invention, the conical portion 42 of pin 33 is constricted around the cylindrical portion of pin 1 when the assembly clamping nut is tightened, and this constriction contact is supplemented by frictionconta'ct along the shank of the pin. Barrel I! may be provided with an annular recess l5, which receives the slotted tubular extension I i of the male plug type connector part, whereby proper electrical contact between the outer conductor and barrel I 2 is secured, even without tightening'locking nut 5.
Once the extension connecter shown in Fig. 2 is connected with the male type connecter of Fig. 1 and locked by nut 5, a safe contact is established between the contact piece I and center conductor pin it, as well as between the outer cable connecter i 0 and barrel II of the extension connecter, while rubber gasket 9 is compressed by the face of the extension connecter barrel l2,
producing a tight gas seal.
herein for illustration, and is susceptible of modiflcations within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a coupling means for electrically connecting cables, contact means comprising a slotted, cylindrical, female contact pin provided with a conical end portion at its outer end, and a recess adapted to receive a registering, cylindrical male contact pin; a cylindrical male contact pin provided with a shoulder having a conical recess registering with said conical end portion of said female contact pin, and locking means for causing tight electrical engagement of said slotted, cylindrical, female contact pin, and saidmamas prising a connecter element of the receptacle tact pin of said connecter element of the-receptacle type, and locking means for causing tight 2. In a coupling means for electrically con- *necting co-axial cables, said coupling means com electrical engagement of said slotted, cylindrical female contact pin and said cylindrical male contact pin by constriction and friction contact,
for electrically connecting the central conductors.
