Abstract

515,614. Valves. MINIMAX Ltd., and HATCH; J. H. March 4, 1938, No. 6885. [Class 135] A valve device particularly adapted for controlling the release of fluid from a fire extinguisher has a lift valve member and a movable gland or packing member mounted in axial alignment on a common spindle, the movable gland or packing member being adapted for axial movements on the valve spindle to permit the valve to be opened or to be locked in its closed position. In the form shown in the Figure the valve d' has a packing f adapted to be pressed tightly against a sealing rib e by screwing a member i<1> on to the screwed end of the valve spindle. The lower end of the packing member i' is tapered to engage frictionally with the corresponding recess in the casing. The lower end may be flat and fitted with a fibrous washer adapted to co-operate with a raised seat surrounding the valve spindle. After unscrewing the member i<1> the valve is opened bv gripping the lever j pivoted at j' against the handle m so that pins on the lever engaging the groove k force the handwheel and valve downwards: For small valves the lever j is dispensed with, direct manual pressure being applied to the top of the handwheel. A safety device comprising a frangible metallic disc is fitted at o. The handwheel may be operated by cam or wedge action and means may be provided to effect the automatic operation of the valve should a fire occur.
