Abstract

515,613. Discharge lamps. MAYS, E. L. March 3, 1938, No. 6724. [Class 39 (i)] To produce animated light effects, discharge tubes containing neon or other rare gas have alternative discharge paths between which the discharge alternates, the paths being formed by a helical glass ribbon B, held in position by constrictions C. The tube containing the ribbon may be bent to desired shape after heating, provided that the ribbon softens at a lower temperature than the tube. To control the discharge effects, clips of phosphor bronze or other material are placed on the tube at its ends or elsewhere, thus providing capacity shunts between the paths. The supply circuits may be as described in Specification 520,354, [Group XXXV].
