Abstract

515,252. Oscillating machines. COMPARE, M. April 27, 1938, No. 12545. [Class 35] [Also in Group XXIV] In apparatus for converting vibratory movement into unidirectional movement of the kind described in Specification 503,916, [Group XXIV], a number of electromagnets are provided arranged in pairs, each pair being fed. from a source of alternating current which is out of phase with that feeding other pairs thereby increasing the number of mechanical vibrations for each electrical impulse. Four electromagnets are provided arranged in pairs 19, 20 and 21, 22 the armatures 25...28 of which are provided with a pair of inclined surfaces 23 arranged wedge fashion. Each of the four wedges is provided with a pair of balls 24 arranged one on each side of a bar 31 to be driven. Two of the electromagnets 19, 20 are energized direct from a source 34 of alternating current, the other two 21, 22 being energized from the same source by a current 90 degrees out of phase. This phase difference being obtained by condensers 32, 33. The effect of this is to give eight driving impulses per alteration of the energizing current. Each pair of electromagnets may be. provided with a speed adjusting device, consisting of a pair of prongs 54, 55, Fig. 3, adapted to bear against the vibrating armatures 48, 49 on which are mounted the ball wedges 50, 51, adapted to rotate a disc 47. The. prongs, of resilient material; are for the purpose of damping the amplitude of oscillation of the wedges and their pressure on the vibrating armatures 48,. 49 is adjustable by screws 56. In a modification, Fig. 4, balls or rollers 60 are inserted between the outer wedge 59 and inner wedges 58 on the driven bar 57.
