Abstract
514,517. Artificial filaments. SOC. RHODIACETA, and ALIBERT, J. M. May 6, 1938, Nos. 13604 and 25609. [Class 2 (ii)] Artificial filaments having points of diminished strength along their length which render them readily convertable into staple fibres, are prepared by subjecting the filaments produced by extrusion of a solution of a cellulose ester or ether in a solvent or solvent mixture to a temperature sufficiently high to ensure faster evaporation of the solvent at various points along their length. The filaments are passed over heated bars carried on the outer surface of a hollow cylinder containing hot fluid, or over bars adapted to form a cylindrical cage and through which an electric current is passed, the bars being placed perpendicularly or obliquely to the direction of travel of the filaments. The heating operation is performed in a chamber which permits the recovery of solvents, after which the filaments are dried or coagulated in. a suitable bath. Examples are given in which a solution of cellulose acetate in acetone and ethyl alcohol is extruded.
