Abstract

513,975. Injection moulding. WATSONSTILLMAN CO. May 25, 1938, No. 15601. Convention date, April 2. [Class 87 (ii)] In injection-moulding apparatus comprising a cylinder 1 having at one end an injection nozzle 3 and carrying a core 9 between the nozzle 3 and a reciprocable plunger, the bore 6 of the cylinder is elongated and of uniform diameter, the core is supported within the cylinder to define a narrow passage of length exceeding the plunger stroke and of uniform radial width and is heated solely from heating means for the cylinder, such as electric units 13, and mainly by conduction through the thermoplastic material being injected. The annular width of the passage is preferably “ inch and its length is preferably two and one-half times the plunger stroke. The nozzle 3 is removable so that the core can be slid out and screws into a counter-bore 8 on the cylinder 1. The core is cylindrical and of torpedo-like form with tapered ends and is supported by radial fins 10 which may extend along its length or be limited to the end portions. The core abuts against the nozzle 3 which is provided with a tapered cavity 3e leading to the injection port 3d. The shank 3b of the nozzle is screw threaded and is provided with longitudinal grooves 11 leading to an annular space defined by a bead 3f whereby material forced past the joint can escape. The heating units are surrounded by asbestos packing 16. The temperature is controlled from a thermocouple 20 in an oblique bore 19 in the cylinder 1.
