Abstract

507,926. Extruding rubber &c. R.P.R. ASSOCIATION, REDFARN, C. A., and SCHIDROWITZ, P. Dec. 29, 1937, No. 35971. [Class 87 (ii)] Materials, such as chlorinated rubber, which expand on extrusion are moulded in apparatus comprising an elongated cylindrical barrel 3 terminating at one end in a flared nozzle 7 and communicating at the other end through a divergent channel 10 with the cylinder 11 of a reciprocating plunger 12, means being provided to heat the barrel and nozzle and to feed the material into the cylinder 11. The material is supplied by a hopper 13 containing agitating prongs 16. The plunger 12 may be actuated hydraulically or by steam or, as shown, by a rocker arm 17 and spring 21 which are adapted to give a fast return stroke. The nozzle 7 and barrel 3 are heated by electric resistances 22, 23 respectively, the nozzle being detachable to provide access to the heaters 23. Thermostats 25 are provided to control the temperature at about 350‹ F. Cooling channels 27 are provided. round the cylinder 11.
