Abstract

1,271,543. Injection moulds. L. W. PUTKOWSKI. 16 May, 1969 [23 May, 1968], No. 25037/69. Heading B5A. A hot runner system for an injection mould comprises first and second members 16 and 28 with bores 20 and 36 respectively interconnected by a heated tubular member 30 which has a snug sliding fit with one of the bored members 16, 28, so as to allow for thermal expansion of the tubular member 30. As shown, the member 28 comprises a gate 26 leading to a mould cavity 6 between mould plates 2, 4. The member 28 is a sliding fit in the plate 2. The tubular member 30 is L-shaped and has one end threaded into the member 28. The other end 32 of the member 30 slides in a radial bore 20 in a sprue bushing 16 having an inlet bore 18. The tubular member 30 is surrounded by heating elements 40, 42. Cooling water flows through channels (not shown) in mould plate 2. Inside the end 34 of the tubular member 30 is a stem 48 having an axial bore 49 and three spaced outlet passages 50 directing material into a space 50a between a stem tip 51 and the member 28. Modifications.-In Fig. 3 (not shown), the stem (48<SP>1</SP>) is movable to open and close the gate (26<SP>1</SP>) by means of an annular pneumatic piston (72). In Fig. 5 (not shown) the stem (48<SP>11</SP>) is biased to closed position by a coil spring (90), and is opened by pressure of injected material. Instead of being L-shaped, the tubular member may be straight as at (100) in Fig. 9 (not shown). In Fig. 10, the tubular member 116 and sprue bushing 120 have equal diameter bores 122 and 124, a yieldable seal 126 being provided therebetween. Alternatively, the tubular member 116 may be of such length as to expand, on heating, to eliminate the gap between it and the sprue bushing.
