Abstract
513,769. Respirators. ROLLAND, L. E. Aug. 6, 1938, No. 23259. [Class 81 (ii)] A device to enable the wearer of a gas mask to absorb a liquid or finely powdered substance that can flow from a receptacle the lid of which is perforated by the device comprises a supply tube 20, one end of which is for insertion through the wall of a gas mask 10 while the other extends into a cutter in the form of a tube 24 which has a cutting edge at its outer end and also, means for providing fluid pressure on the surface of the substance in the receptacle to force it up the supply tube. The means comprises an auxiliary tube 22 which is united to the supply tube at suitable points, both passing fluid tightly through the end 26 of the cutter and the washer 34 at the gas mask end. This washer is engaged fluidtightly by the closure member 36 co-operating with the splayed end of a rubber tube 18 mounted on a metal flange 16 in the mask. Suction is applied to the supply tube by means of the mouthpiece 32, purified air to replace the liquid removed from the receptacle flowing from the interior of the mask by the tube 22. To facilitate perforation of the receptacle lid the cutter and supply tube is cut off at an angle and a slidable flexible washer 28 which is held between the lid of the receptacle and'the end 26 of the cutter prevents the contamination of the contents of the 'receptacle. If fluid is desired from a bottle a screw threaded washer 42 may be provided to co-operate with a complementary thread on the bottle. When the device is not in use the opening in the mask is blocked by a stopper attached to the mask by a short chain. Exhalation through the tube 18 prevents the entry of noxious gases during the removal of the tubes. Alternatively the tube 22 may be replaced by means such as a pump or gas cylinder for exerting pressure on the substance in the receptacle. The receptacle and associated apparatus such as the pump or gas Cylinder above may be carried on a belt round the waist and the pipes may be in two parts connected by a union.
