Abstract

1,189,479. Respiratory apparatus. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. 7 Aug., 1967 [10 Aug., 1966], No. 36162/67. Heading A5T. A device for administering a medicinal vapour to a patient comprises a casing with a connection 24 for a source of breathing gas under pressure, a reservoir 6 for the liquid medicament, and an outlet 8 for applying the medicinal vapour to the patient, the casing also including a valve for controlling the flow of the gas from the source to the outlet by way of the reservoir, the valve being arranged so that when the flow of gas is halted the outlet is automatically opened to atmosphere. As shown, by manually depressing a lever 21 a valve stem 15 with a closure flange 14 is moved away from a seat 13 and the gas is able to flow through the nipple 24 into a bore 25 and through fine bores 27 into the liquid medicament. The gas, together with fine liquid droplets, then flows through the outlet duct 8, 30 into a face mask 9 or mouthpiece (Figure 3, not shown) and thence to the patient. The device is arranged so that when the lever 21 is released and the flange 14 arrests the gas flow, the end 16 of the valve stem opens a valve member 17 allowing the gas outlet to communicate through an aperture 35 to atmosphere. The liquid is added to the reservoir 6 by removing a lid 29 and is contained under an apertured baffle 32. The lever 21 acts on the valve stem 15 through an end cap 19, and a spring 36 which loads the valve member 17 is adjustable by rotating a member 37. The device may include a bore 40 in the valve stem 15, the bore by-passing the liquid reservoir so that the proportion of gas in the mixture is increased by an adjustable amount of gas passing directly from the nipple 24 to the gas outlet 8. The by-pass is arranged to operate either by fully depressing the lever 21 or by rotating the valve stem. It is stated that, with no liquid in the reservoir 6, the device may be used for administering gas alone.
